Gold mining can affect the environment, by generating hazardous and non-hazardous waste and effluents, and through emissions into the atmosphere, water and soil. We aim to minimise Nordgold’s environmental impact.
Our policy
Our environmental objectives are to:
- prevent pollution
- reduce greenhouse gas emissions
- use energy and natural resources rationally, and
- manage waste efficiently.
Managing our environmental performance
Nordgold is subject to environmental laws and regulations in each jurisdiction we work in. These laws and regulations address issues such as:
- air and water quality
- emissions standards, and
- disposal of waste.
We are committed to complying with these requirements and each mine has an environmental specialist to focus on legal compliance and achieving our objectives.
Our performance
Our environmental target is to have zero major environmental incidents, where we are required to notify the authorities of the impact on the environment. In 2010 we had no incidents, as was the case in 2009.We look to continuously improve our processes and equipment. For example, at LEFA in Guinea, we have developed an action plan covering areas such as environmental monitoring and waste management.
Similarly, in Burkina Faso, we have developed a follow-up plan for environmental management at the Taparko mine. The plan guides all of our environmental actions and aims to minimise any potentially negative effects.
